Andy Charles provides a horse-by-horse guide to an exceptional renewal of the St Jamess Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot. Royal Ascot gets under way on Tuesday afternoon with a whole host of big races and more than £1.7m in prize money up for grabs. Among the big races is the St Jamess Palace Stakes, which features the winners of three classics and will surely go a long way to deciding the three-year-old mile championship.Check out our A-Z guide to one of Tuesdays highlights...AWTAAD (Form: 31-111)Trainer: Kevin Prendergast. Jockey: Chris HayesHas improved on every one of his five career runs so far and it is doubtful the progress will stop here. Brushed the classy Galileo Gold aside in winning the Irish 2,000 Guineas last time out and hard to see the runner-up turning that form around in fairly similar conditions. Rating: 10/10CYMRIC (Form: 128-85)Trainer: John Gosden. Jockey: James DoyleOften highly tried last season, although did run a superb race when finishing second in the Group 1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere on Arc weekend at Longchamp. Two runs this season have seen him fail to beat a single rival and another struggle looks to be on the cards. Rating: 2/10EHTIRAAS (Form: 2-32)Trainer: Owen Burrows. Jockey: Paul HanaganCaught just about on the line in his most recent outing, but that was in a fairly ordinary Sandown maiden when he was beaten by a horse who had never previously run before. That sums up his chance here. Rating: 1/10EMOTIONLESS (Form: 117-)Trainer: Charlie Appleby. Jockey: William BuickWon his first two races last season, including the Group 2 Champagne Stakes at Doncaster, but he was a costly flop in the Dewhurst and has not run since that defeat more than eight months ago. His trainer wanted to give him time to strengthen but this might be just too tough an opening assignment. Rating: 6/10FIRST SELECTION (Form: 15-672)Trainer: Simon Crisford. Jockey: Jim CrowleyBig price outsider (66/1 and 50/1) in the English and French 2,000 Guineas but picked up some valuable prize money when second to The Gurkha at Deauville. More experience than any of his rivals but his best form would only be enough for a place chance. Rating: 4/10GALILEO GOLD (Form: 113-12)Trainer: Hugo Palmer. Jockey: Frankie DettoriHugely impressive winner of the English 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket in April but that form has taken a few knocks, including when he was soundly put in his place by Awtaad at The Curragh. Probably wouldnt want genuinely soft ground either. Rating: 7/10THE GURKHA (Form: 311)Trainer: Aidan OBrien. Jockey: Ryan MooreThe sole challenger from Ballydoyle has won his last two races by 14 1/2 lengths combined, stepping up from a Navan maiden to win the French 2,000 Guineas last time out at a canter. Closely matched with the other Guineas winners on that and soft ground would appear not to be an issue. Rating: 9/10ZONDERLAND (Form: 145-61)Trainer: Clive Cox. Jockey: Adam KirbyRan a fine race when fifth behind Galileo Gold in the English 2,000 Guineas and enjoyed the drop to Listed class when winning at Sandown last time (Cymric well held), but no obvious reason to think he can turn around Newmarket form. Rating: 5/10VERDICT:The three Guineas winners are closely matched on form and it is hard to make a compelling case for any of the other quintet. Although The Gurkha thrashed the field in France, that form does not look as good as AWTAAD managed in the Irish edition of the race and he can give his 83-year-old trainer another big prize to celebrate. Galileo Gold may have to settle for third behind two rivals who will relish conditions. Also See: Live results service Full racecards Get Sky Sports £3 free bet every time your team wins!
